NZ December/ January 22/23 Day One: Boxing Day

Sydney is under that cloud…somewhere

What is the old proverb? ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step…’ Unless you live in Canberra and have an international connection. In which case it begins with an early trip to the airport and a bug smasher ride to Sydney or Melbourne. So we were up at 0 Rude Hundred and boarded by 6am. Only to sit on the plane for 30 minutes and then be off loaded because Sydney was fogged in and no one could land there (See proof of fog life picture above).

A few hours later we were in Sydney, connection was made because everything was running late because of the fog. Things began to look up when we boarded and Mark could geek out playing with all the various button, hatches and lights on his seat 🙄. A comfortable flight to Auckland which also featured numerous aerial laps of our eventual destination ( Waiheke Island). This was due to another weather hold, this time because of an intense rain cell static over the Auckland runway.

More buttons than you can poke a stick at.

After clearing the airport it was a smooth ride downtown to the ferry terminal and a quick ferry transfer to Waiheke Island. There was an almost eerie lack of traffic on the run into the city , assumption was everyone has cleared out for the holidays or was still stonkered by yesterday’s pudding.

Short bus ride from the ferry wharf saw us dragging our bags 800m up a steepish hill to our ‘Bach’ for the next few nights. A Bach is a NZ holiday home , generally / often near the coast. The one we are staying in is a beaut little cabin stuck up in the rear of someone’s hillside section. Lots of greenery , birdsong and, if we squint a bit , a water view.

Squint and you can see the nice bay at the bottom of the road up
Looking down the section from the deck on our Bach … not sure the photo conveys how steep it is
